Anotace anglicky
The project addresses the issue of how the position of Prague as the capital city of an independent state after 1918 influenced its urban development, internal organization, functional structure, and self-presentation. How was this “heightened” position reflected by the public? Throughout the existence of the Czechoslovak Republic, Prague was the centre of the modernization of society. As a powerful and dynamic political, cultural, informational and financial-economic metropolis that accentuated its national and international dimension i.a. by acting as a magnet for visitors and immigrants to Czechoslovakia, it found itself repeatedly in opposition to the policies and interests of the governing elites of the state. This was usually met by direct and indirect repression on the part of the latter. We want to explore the terms and conditions of this status and, through comparison with Warsaw and Vienna, show the parallels and differences of the development of Prague in the context of Central, resp. East-Central Europe (for the years 1948–1989 across the Iron Curtain).
