Czech Salon Art in an International Context

Anotace anglicky

Salon art works were presented at art exhibitions, called ‘salons’, organised especially for middle-classes or ‘bourgeoisie’ in the second half of the 19th century, and marked with specific aesthetic qualities (the so-called ‘salon genre’). It has long been neglected as ‘conventional production’ with primarily commercial focus; a new appreciation of this phenomenon has occurred in the postmodern perspective, beginning in the 1970s. In order to define Czech salon art in terms of contemporary point of view, it will be essential to take into account the international context – not only to identify artistic influences, but also to explore cultural processes contributing to the constitution of national art schools and promoting them on the international forum. The phenomenon of Czech salon art is primarily associated with the annual art exhibitions of the Krasoumná jednota (Society for Fine Arts) in Prague. Although this institution will be in the main focus, the project will cover the entire spectrum of activities of similar institutions, including those in Paris, Munich and Vienna.
