Information Acquisition and Speculation. Implications for the Shale Gas Development in the US

Anotace anglicky

The first innovator in the market has advantage in acquiring scarce resources, not only for future production, but for subsequent resale to the second-wave entrepreneurs. Speculation happens while learning about the productivity of new technology continues. The first-mover has incentives to structure information acquisition process in a way to achieve better interim results and earn higher speculative return. But by doing this, the first-mover loses opportunity to better learn long-run prospects of the new technology, and inefficient technology may be implemented. The project develops a model that introduces speculation motive to real investment option framework, to comprehensively evaluate the economic impact of capitalization on initial private information. When gains from speculation are sufficiently large, learning is insufficiently low. The project identifies policies that can improve welfare without requiring the social planner to have any information advantage vis-à-vis the market. The model predictions are tested empirically using the data on shale gas development in the US.
