Anotace anglicky
The project aims to interpret the life path and work of Richard Messer (1881 – 1962), today almost forgotten agent of the German studies and art criticism discourse in Prague. The resulting monograph will present Messer’s academic, journalistic and pedagogical activities in Prague, developing from 1922 onwards (when he became a German teacher at the Czech Faculty of Arts and began to write for the daily newspaper Prager Presse), in terms of their thematic and methodological inclinations (with a distinct focus on the work of Rilke), and with regards to linguistic, national-ethnic, political and religious contexts, which in Messer’s case are framed by his prior, exceptionally layered, experiences, beginning with his childhood and youth spent in the Serbian part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (in a German-speaking Jewish family); continuing with his student years in Budapest, Grenoble and Heidelberg; private doctoral studies in Geneva; and his subsequent career as a secondary school teacher in Bratislava (and briefly also the publisher of the expressionist magazine Das Riff /1920/).
