Social Question in Situ: Social Policies of Industrial Enterprises in Bohemian Lands, 1879-1914

Anotace anglicky

This project deals with the social policies of private industrial enterprises in the Bohemian Lands between 1879 and 1914 in the context of discussions over the social question and against the backdrop of criticism of economic liberalism. Basing itself on the example of selected enterprises, it analyses the welfare institutions pursued by these enterprises. It enquires into the historical conditions behind which the welfare institutions (e.g. canteens, cooperative shops, housing, hospitals, shools) emerged within these enterprises and the ways in which they were created by industrial paternalism, social legislation and demands of the workers' movement. The project also looks into the transfer of knowledge between the Bohemian Lands and the Western world, as well as whether the construction of welfare institutions generated ethnic and gender conflicts. These issues will be dealt with by using the concept of welfare capitalism and qualitative research into the archive fonds of selected industrial enterprises, municipalities, district prefectures and trade llicensing inspectorates.
