The Role of Geopolitics in the Italian National Movement before 1848

Anotace anglicky

Experts on early 19th century Italian history agree on the considerable importance of geopolitics for the politicisation of the Italian national movement, which its members also acknowledged themselves. Despite this fact, the role of geopolitics in this movement has never been thoroughly analysed by historians who have simultaneously overlooked another important fact: this geopolitical thinking did not originate by accident but in reaction to the deficiencies of the European States System after 1815, in particular the abuse of power by the Great Powers. Moreover, this phenomenon was not restricted to only Italy but was widespread across European countries, social classes and political groups as a result of the increasing mistrust in the stability and justice of the post-Napoleonic states system. The goal of the project is to call attention to this hitherto neglected pan-European phenomenon through a complex analysis of the significance of geopolitics in the politicisation of the Italian national movement before 1848 and particularly in a monograph written in English.
