Atheism, Freethought and Secularization in Central and Eastern European Countries in the 20th and 21st Centuries

Anotace anglicky

Despite the fact that Central and Eastern Europe is often considered as a distinctly secularized European region, there are almost no contemporary extensive studies on the consequences of secularization, atheisms and the phenomenon of so called non-religion. Generally, much less attention has been paid to the analysis of the topic then to the study of traditional and modern forms of religion. If studied, scholars were mostly interested in the historical and social causes of the decreased religiosity in particular countries, but much less in the study of modern nature of faithlessness. The project starts filling this gap by approaching the question of secularization from a new direction: instead of the usual “decline of religion”, it focuses on the “rise and ‘faces of non-religion” using novel interdisciplinary approach by combining historical, sociological anthropological methods. The project provides new stance to the discussion on secularization, new forms of atheism and non-religion, and will provide new knowledge about the role of religion and secularity in the region.
