Early medieval strongholds in the light of non-destructive investigation
Anotace anglicky
The investigation of early medieval centres is one of the principal tasks of Central European historical/archaeological research. However, information gleaned from written sources is limited. Archaeological information is strongly determined by the size of the excavated area. The aim of this project is to extend this knowledge using a wide range of non-invasive prospection methods. The main task is to answer the questions related to the layout of the features inside the strongholds and in the surroundings, the extent and density of inhabitation and the nature of the fortification systems. The project will focus on three important questions: Are the main and well known strongholds on the river Morava the only ones of this kind in the Great Moravian territory?Were all of these strongholds local power centres, or did some of them serve as refugiums? What are the differences and parallels between the strongholds in Great Moravia and the power centres of the later early medieval states?
