The Transmission and Transformation of Ideas in Hellenism, Early Judaism, and Early Christianity

This interdisciplinary project deals with the dynamic relations between early Judaism and early Christianity on the basis of critical and complex analysis of selected literary works. The main goal of the project is to elucidate the process of shaping of early Christianity both in response to early Hellenised Judaism and in the reaction against it. This development is best to be observed in the literary sources of the history of both religions which thus become the main material for studying this process of transmission and transformation of ideas during history. The understanding of this process is further complicated by the fact that both of these religions were in many respects conditioned by the complex history of Hellenism which, so far, has been studied only unsystematically in the Czech Republic. Therefore, in this project, we would like to systematically explore Hellenistic roots of those later phenomena by studying the literary sources and by creating of the pilot version of a scholarly and interdisciplinary Encyclopaedia of Hellenism, Post-Hellenism, and Early Christianity.
