Anotace anglicky
The art and literary critic, curator and organizer Jindřich Chalupecký (1910–1990) is a central figure for understanding the fate of Czechoslovak culture from the 1930s to the 1980s. Yet we still lack a synthetic publication on Chalupecký. The project’s goal is to analyze the social conditions under which this critic engaged in his activities. A reconstruction of the extent of Chalupecký’s foreign relationships will allow us to properly assess the international dimension of his activities. The results of this research should help us to understand the extent to which Chalupecký’s views on art can be applied to the international avant-garde and neo-avant-garde. Was his belief in the active function of art, which presaged the anthropological view of art as an active social agent, the exclusive product of conditions under state socialism, or was it a universal critique of modern civilization? The project’s main output will be a monographic publication.
