Factors affecting chemosensory development in childhood and adolescence from a semi-longitudinal perspective

Anotace anglicky

The aim of the project is semi-longitudinal modelling of the development of smell and taste perception, including the metacognitive aspect, i.e., odour awareness. Changes over the period of 2 years will be modelled in nearly 400 children and adolescents by means of 3 testing sessions held in 12-month intervals. This will be the first semi-longitudinal study to look into the specific cognitive factors contributing to chemosensory development in childhood and adolescence. Besides self-report questionnaires and standardised psychophysical testing, these will be investigated using parent and teacher reports. Adolescents will also participate in a task to promote perceptual learning in everyday life in the long term and its influence on smell and taste scores will be evaluated. Another novel aspect of this study consists in examining the link between self-reported chemosensory awareness and its behavioural manifestations. This study will be the first to lend insight into the intertwined development of smell and taste, with a focus on intra-individual as well inter-individual variation.
