Case Study of the Middle Eastern Refugees: Iraqi Yazidis

The project from the Middle Eastern studies deals with refugees and IDPs from the Yazidi minority in Iraq and their complex motivations about migration to Europe. The Iraqi Yazidis have undergone several waves of forced displacement in the 20th century. However, their position and security situation has significantly worsened since 2003 due to growing Islamic radicalism and due to attack against Iraqi Yazidis perpetuated by the so called Islamic state and its local supporters in 2014. The project is a case study of a Middle Eastern minority in the contemporary unstable and fragile Middle East based on a field research on the territory of the Kurdish regional government in Northern Iraq (IDPs) and on the territory of Germany (refugees). The project is based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with refugees/IDPs and the collected data will be analyzed using the so called grounded theory methodology. The research design is comparative: it compares four different samples of Yazidis to uncover the complex motivations and factors that shape Yazidi migration.
