Robert Saudek (1880 Kolín - 1935 London) represents a half-forgotten figure that is at the same time interesting in many respects, not least the diversity of areas he was involved in during his working life between 1900 and 1935 and was thus able to co-create and interconnect. He was born in Central Bohemia, later living in Paris, Berlin, The Hague, Potsdam and finally London; starting in 1903, he began to create a profile for himself as a playwright, literary critic, prose writer, journalist, intelligence networks organiser and finally also promoter and face of “scientific graphology”. He was active on the interfaces of several cultural, national, linguistic and political complexes – Jewish, Czech, German, Dutch, British. Focusing on his activities and texts will contribute to a new view of relationships and entanglements within the literary, philosophical and cultural-critical Central European – as well as more broadly European – discourse prior the First World War and during the 1920s and 1930s, a subject much discussed in recent decades.
