The German Response to International Insecurity: The Germans and Europe between the Written Law and the Law of the Mightiest 1839–1853

Anotace anglicky

In the mid 19th century under the influence of supranational affairs Germans felt more insecure in a world dominated by the law of the mightiest instead of the written law. Therefore, regardless of their origin, political views, gender and social status they participated in debates about the future of Germany, Europe and the world and tried to determine how to ensure better security of their own native states and all the German fatherland and, simultaneously, greater justice and a more stable peace between all countries and nations. The phenomena analysed independently so far such as the rise of German nationalism, the request for naval armament and colonial expansion, the genesis of Realpolitik and the concept of Mitteleuropa, the deterioration in relations and wars with other nations and the participation in the peace movement can all be seen as displays of this important but neglected process. The project’s goal is to analyse this strong interaction between international politics and the development of German society in 1839–1853, particularly in a monograph written in English.
