Performative Utterances in Epigraphical Documents of the Ancient Mediterranean Tradition

The project aims to collate a commented corpus of Greek, Latin, Hebrew and Aramaic texts containing performative use of the adjuration formula. These texts will be then translated and the research team will produce their structural linguistic analysis, present them on the backdrop of their respective religious, magical and wider socio-cultural context, identify continuities and divergences of their use with respect to different regional and diachronic parameters and compare epigraphical data with descriptions of adjurations and "exorcisms" in the literary traditions of Graeco-Roman Antiquity, Christianity and Judaism. Despite the interdisciplinary nature of the project, the team will be working in a well-defined methodological framework to produce unifying understanding of collated texts, which are currently spread across many dozens specialised epigraphic collections and databases. The translation and commentary of the inscriptions will improve their accessibility to a wide variety of researchers in the fields of Philology, Theology, Religious Studies, Ancient History or Literature.
