Anotace anglicky

The aim of this project is to investigate the no-longer extant phenomenon of “removal”, which is closely linked to the origin of state-inspired care for the poor. Removal has to be understood as the forced transport of people, usually on foot, to their “official home” within the Austrian state. The lawmakers’ idea was simple: there would be at least one place in their country where poor or needy people could not be expelled from. Implementing removal, however, was not simple and is the subject of the proposed project. The author understands removal and care of the poor as being part of the same problem. Care for the poor, which had previously been dependent on acts of philanthropy, was transferred into the hands of the state, which attempted to create structures to identify the needy and provide for them. The centre of care for the poor was to be an “official home”, where no-one could be expelled from. The person requiring help would be provided for in this place. The project output should be two studies and one international monograph.
