The project is focused on the study of rites of passage in the Czech Protestant tradition since the Patent of Toleration. The subject of the research is traditional rituals used to accompany important events in the life cycle (baptism, confirmation, wedding, funeral), but also some new rituals. The aim is to explore transformations of their concepts, form, meaning, and spirituality. The project will search for their connections with social and cultural changes, liturgical movement, ecumenism and studies of symbol and ritual. It will elaborate upon and examine the theory that in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, Protestant rites of passage were formed with a strong reference to the tradition of the Czech and European Reformation, after which they were then gradually transformed with respect to the ecumenical and social situation, and since the beginning of the 21st century also with respect to the symbolic and ritual dimension. The project will inquire into the challenges brought by secularisation and the global pandemic Covid-19.
