Inculturation of Christianity in India: Meaning and Relevance of a New Religious Symbolism

The project deals with the results of inculturation in the Indian Catholic Church, who identified with the ideas and the goals of inculturation in the 1970s and even expressed its official support to it for a few next years. Field research, carried out in three stages, will enable the collection of incultured material of new religious symbolism that touches upon many aspects of the life of the Church – a ritual and related rhetorical turnings in newly formulated religious texts, sacral art, architecture and daily spiritual practice of the religious as well as the laity. The research questions with which the collected material will be analyzed concern: (1) the selection of elements of incultured symbolism, (2) the ways they are integrated, (3) whether the elements continue to bear their original meaning, and on the contrary, what meaning they acquire in the Christian context, (4) how the integration of elements is seen by the proponents and recipients of incultured symbolism, (5) whether the general ideological goals of inculturation have been met through the new religious symbolism.
