The memory of the past, with its processes of appropriation, revisiting, and visualization is crucial for the construction of European identity. But how is the memory of the past constructed within a “cosmopolitan” and “multicultural” reality? And what are the impacts of such reality’s needs on the visualization of the past? This project aims to answer these questions through the lens of the representative case study of 14th-century Venice and the analysis of the contemporary illustrated manuscripts of ancient history that have played a major role as the intersection of visual, textual, and material discourses. As such, the manuscripts represent an ideal material to reconsider the complexity of Venetian historical identity-building. The project’s outputs – including the organization of an international conference as well as the publication of a monograph and a series of papers, – will serve as a model for the development of an innovative framework to investigate the construction of alternative past realities in the medieval and post-medieval world.
