Entrepreneurship and Institutional Change: The Case of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Collapse and the Creation of Czechoslovakia

The allocation of resources among various types of entrepreneurship is crucial for economic prosperity. This project explores the forms of productive and unproductive entrepreneurship in the Bohemian lands changed after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Our central thesis is that before the collapse, a substantial amount of effort was allocated to unproductive activities, as Czechs strived for political autonomy within the Empire. The foundation of Czechoslovakia opened the possibility for reallocating resources to productive uses but also created new opportunities for unproductive activities, such as rent-seeking. Simultaneously, the considerable shrinking of the market had potential negative impacts on productivity. We will collect historical data from the archives to explore the allocation of resources among various entrepreneurial activities in the Bohemian lands and its relationship to institutions before and after the Empire’s collapse. This project will contribute to a better understanding of the complex interplay between institutions and entrepreneurial activities.
