Schlaraffia: The Element of Play in Nineteenth-century Culture

Anotace anglicky

The term Schlaraffia refers to a network of associations founded in Prague 1859 that has spread throughout the world within the German middle classes. By 1914, there were 200 Schlaraffias in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and Australia / Oceania, and over 100 more in the inter-war period. The phenomenon was born out of the 19th century historicism and parodied the existing social order, hierarchy and culture. Unlike previous research, this project aims to examine Schlaraffia by an interdisciplinary approach 1) using the concept of the Carnevalesque and theories treating the play as a symbol of the world, i. e. the middle class world, rooted in historicism of the 2nd half of the 19th century, rather than a marginal social form, 2) using methodology of literary science, art history and musicology, to identify the sources and means of humour and thus contribute to understanding the elitesʼ culture in this period, and 3) describing Schlaraffia as a male organization and a pseudo-genealogically structured worldwide social network with Prague in the centre.
