The preservation of the body was a crucial precondition for reaching the afterlife in ancient Egypt. Various types of burial containers (wood, stone, reed, pottery) were intended for these purposes. Some of them bore religious texts or symbolic motifs. Despite being a key feature of the burial equipment, the Old Kingdom and First Intermediate Period containers have not yet been properly studied. Therefore, the proposed project aims to scrutinize both diachronic and synchronic trends in the development of all various types of burial containers in this period (ca. 2592–1980 BC). Essential is the establishment of a freely accessible database of the preserved material and the creation of a new and updated typology and chronology of the containers. An in-depth analysis of selected objects, with an application of scientific methods (e.g. dendrology, palaeobotany), will allow to specify containers’ spatial distribution, identify particular workshops and clarify the extent of individual social dynamics of their owners. Furthermore, religious connotations will be studied.
