Philosophical Legitimation of Science in the Early Enlightenment: Fontenelle and His Contemporaries

Anotace anglicky

The project examines the means of philosophical legitimation of science in France at the beginning of the Enlightenment. At the end of the 17th century, scientific research was not yet a recognized part of the culture. Scientists and philosophers strove to advocate for scientific research and to promote science as the most valuable form of knowledge. A number of different strategies were used to accomplish this. Our research focuses on the legitimating function of selected philosophical concepts. Primarily, we focus on the philosophical interpretation of history, marking the progress of scientific knowledge as a key factor in historical development. Second, we explain how the reconceptualization of cognitive passions and epistemic virtues contributed to the creation of a new type of cognitive standard bearer: the scientist. The sources for our research will be primarily the reports of Bernard de Fontenelle and his colleagues on scientific research at the Academy of Sciences in Paris between 1699 and 1740. The main output of the project will be 8 articles in international journals.
