The project analyses the role of intellectual mediators between cultures and disciplines in European cultural history between ca. 1930-1960, using the example of the German publisher Joachim Moras (1902-1961). It describes the complex dynamics of the transfer that takes place between the European thought of the interwar and wartime period and its transformation after 1945. It explores the degree of intellectual continuity and discontinuity at the boundaries of three politically distinct epochs and the tensions created by the contention between national and European values, cultural modernism and traditionalism. Main outcomes are: one monograph and one thematic issue of a specialist journal. It analyses the literary, political and art historical aspects of Moras' activities, which touch on all three epochs and areas: the journals "Europäische Revue" and "Merkur", the yearbooks "Jahresring", the series of balance sheets and the 'Rowohlt German Encyclopaedia'. Given the nature of Moras' publishing activities, it combines textual analysis with literary sociological methods.
