Construction of Noble Identity in the Works of Bohuslav Balbín

Anotace anglicky

Just as today, also in the early modern age people were bound to a certain community by the feeling of togetherness built on the basis of one’s own identity – national, confessional or that of the estates. The nobility, together with the prelates and the rulers, constituted an early modern elite and the construction of their identity was primarily that of exclusivity. The works by Czech Jesuit B. Balbín offer a unique possibility to learn about the mental roots of this construction which had practical implications during the early modern period. Although Balbín touched upon the issue of Bohemian nobility in many of his treatises, it was not until the second decade of his Miscellanea that he attempted to approach it systematically as an estate. A critical commented edition of this part of Balbín’s writings and historical and genealogic-heraldic analysis of this work and other treatises will open possibilities for evaluation and interpretation of Balbín’s views on the nobility, as well as for learning about the general context in which the noble identity was constructed.
