Questioning the Intelligent Soul: The Active Intellect and its Role in the Jesuit Philosophy of the 16th century

Anotace anglicky

The main goal of this project is to explore, from a systematic perspective, the theories of cognition taught by Jesuit thinkers active in Paris from the opening of the Jesuit College to the beginning of the 17th century. Although their works belong to the Aristotelian framework, these thinkers discard the overall Aristotelian account of cognition, as they break with its fundamental tenets: the intellect is understood as a solely active power, the senses, as a merely passive; the traditional cognitive model of assimilation is rejected, as the intellect can grasp its objects of cognition directly, and by means of no intermediaries; no distinction is deemed necessary between agent and patient intellect. It is precisely on such re-elaborations that this project intends to focus. Thus far, the texts we will study—a series of treatises on the “intelligent soul”—are mostly unknown to the scholars. We think that their analysis will allow us to understand an important transformation in the history of psychology in the times of Counter-Reformation and at the dawn of Modern era.
