Montmartre, highest point of Paris, is dominated by a building crowned by a large dome and cupolas: the Sacré-Cœur (1875–91). Where one would expect to see a Neo-Gothic cathedral associated with French Catholicism and Nationalism, we find a building more reminiscent of San Marco in Venice or ‘Oriental’ architecture. Indeed, it was inspired by the visual culture – often considered decadent in these years – of a political entity that had disappeared four centuries ago: the Eastern Roman Empire, or ‘Byzantium’. This is not an oddity: between 1848 and 1900, dozens of churches in France were indeed newly erected or restored in a historicist architectural style described as ‘Neo-Byzantine’. Why such choice for some of the country’s most iconic buildings? This project, through the investigation of a series of case studies of ‘Neo-Byzantine’ architectural projects in 19th-century France wishes to answer this question. It will, doing so, uncover the role of ‘Neo-Byzantine’ style in the reinvention of medieval art and in the formulation of racist, colonial, and national myths of art history.
