Highly Skilled Migrants’ Perspectives and the Public Attitudes Towards Them

The COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukrainian refugee situation have partly shifted the focus away from a theme that is increasingly salient for the future use of the migration potential in countries that want to stay competitive in the global labor market. Yet, highly skilled migration is increasingly gaining importance in public debates in OECD countries and national discourses. At the same time, we know comparatively little about this group of migrants in Central and Eastern Europe. There has been a growing interest in attracting highly skilled workers in the Czech Republic, but they face many barriers in their daily lives. This project will look at the highly skilled migrants’ perceived discrimination, which will be done through a survey and in-depth interviews. At the same time, we will investigate public attitudes towards highly skilled migrants in the Czech Republic through an original survey experiment with Czech citizens. Using the lens of intersectionality, we attempt to discover the determinants that influence the public in their views of different migrant groups.
