Anotace anglicky
The archaeological site of Roztoky near Prague from the end of the 6th and the 7th centuries AD represents a unique phenomenon in Central Europe, and, at the same time, an extraordinary research problem. It is a ‘megasite’ with a total of up to 1,000 sunken houses strikingly contrasting with the typical form of small agricultural settlements of the time. Its enigmatic nature is underlined by the fact that, despite the processing of an extensive collection of ecofacts, no clear economic or ecological explanation has yet been found for the creation of such a large settlement agglomeration. The project will summarise all published data and complement it with the assessment of so far unprocessed finds and some new types of scientific analyses. On this basis, the relevance of various hypotheses will be reassessed, including the variant of a specialized production area, seasonal congregation site, and others. The project aims to remove the site from the character of a ‘glitch in the matrix’ and to find a logical explanation for it in the form of a historical model.
