Anotace anglicky

The kinetochore is a complex multiprotein structure that connects chromosomes to spindle microtubules and ensures chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis. While the composition, structure, and function of the kinetochore have been studied in great detail in fungal and animal models, our knowledge of kinetochores in plants is still very superficial. In this project, we propose to use molecular, cytogenetic, and bioinformatics methods to fill some of the major gaps in our understanding of plant kinetochore protein composition and plasticity among evolutionarily distant plant groups, focusing on species that differ in their mode of centromere organization. Deciphering the composition of plant kinetochores and their interspecific variability is critical to fully understand the principles of plant chromosome segregation and to recognize the substantial changes that have occurred during evolution. Such changes have occurred in some holocentric species, therefore, a more detailed study could help elucidate the causes and consequences of the origin of holocentric chromosomes.
