We will re-tell life stories of men and women who have spent long time in the asylums for people with ‘mental impairment’, ‘besides’ genealogies of (total) regimes of care and disciplination and explore, through such re-telling, relations between subjectifying narratives and practices of creating disabled ‘I’. Together with live stories and histories of the asylums, we will concentrate on other discourses which have affected lives of the survivors of the Czech asylums system, e.g. on medicine, law or social welfare, as well as on the counter-discourses through which people with disabilities and their kin contest power. ‘Besides’ is also a research question: In which way are the lives of people with disabilities influenced by totalizing regimes of care and disciplination which frame their personal narratives as symptoms of physical states or products of disciplination? And what impact the life stories, experiences and revolts of the disabled people could have, when they gain a place in the public debate about common world for differently dis/abled, differently un/subjugated, citizens?
