Aristotle on the Nature of Human Thinking

The project focuses on Aristotle’s thesis that human reason (nous) is passive or receptive, and its place in the history of thought. It starts from the hypothesis that this thesis cannot be explained away, e.g. by reference to Aristotle's notion of “productive reason”, as is common in the secondary literature (since antiquity), but that it must be taken seriously as the very core of Aristotle's conception of human rationality. It provides the first systematic examination of Aristotle's notion of receptive reason, with immediate implications for our understanding of other areas of Aristotelian philosophy: Aristotle's conception of knowledge, the metaphysical cause of motion, the role of reason in human action. Given the enormous influence of Aristotle's conception, the project will also shed new light on the earliest history of the concept of rationality. It will result in (i) three studies analysing Aristotle's notion of receptive reason and its implications and (ii) a comprehensive collective monograph covering for the first time the entire earliest history of reason (nous).
