The Aesthetic and Political Practices of East-Central European Music Videos after 2000

Anotace anglicky

This research project examines contemporary Czech, Slovak, and Polish music videos from an unexplored perspective of the mutual relationship between aesthetic and political practices. It analyzes the affective, formal, and discursive aspects of the videos released after 2000 across the various musical genres of hip-hop, rock, and indie pop to explain how they arise from and co-shape a broader media ecosystem and sociocultural context. Drawing on music video studies, cultural affect theory, and audiovisual studies, the project shifts away from the usual representational and purely formalist approaches and instead proposes to study these cultural objects relationally: in their intersections between moving images, musical arrangements, rhythms, and lyrics on the one hand and social tensions and political conflicts on the other. By focusing on the aesthetic-political interactions within the so far uncharted area of East-Central European music video, the project also fills in gaps within the current scholarship concerned primarily with the US and British production.
