Fragmented Memory: Decoding Visconti Correspondence from the Court of King Wenceslas

Anotace anglicky

The project aims to explore the relationship between the Holy Roman King/Emperor and imperial Italy (Regnum Italiae) in the Late Middle Ages, with the specific example of King Wenceslas and Giangaleazzo Visconti, Lord of Milan and one of the most powerful rulers on the Apennine Peninsula. A crucial source will be the so far unknown fragments of Latin correspondence of the Milanese ambassadors from Prague dated 1386–1387, discovered by the applicant and preserved in Parma, which contain a rich amount of new information about the relations between Wenceslas and Visconti, the life at the royal court and diplomatic practice. Following the input from an international workshop on diplomatic fragments, this unique material will be the subject of a monograph, containing a detailed analysis and edition and highlighting the possibilities of using the source. On the basis of these new findings, which will be complemented by research in the archives and libraries of Milan and Pavia, the relationship between King Wenceslas and Giangaleazzo Visconti will then be examined.
