Aristotle on the best life and its structure
Anotace anglicky
The proposed project answers the following questions: what is the relationship between happiness and a happy life? What are Aristotle's reasons for preferring the contemplative life? What is Aristotle's conception of the best life for human beings (if any) and what role do moral virtues and contemplation play in it? The proposed project will describe the structure of the life that Aristotle proposes as the best human life. My working hypothesis is that a proper interpretation of the complexity of the best life must simultaneously take into account both the reciprocity and the hierarchy that holds between the so-called ways of life (NE 1.5). There is some reciprocity between two hierarchically ordered ways of life, but this reciprocity is asymmetric and ordered in favor of the higher one.
