Miloš Forman: Constructing Film Authorship Across Two Continents

The project will examine the construction of the film authorship of the renowned Czech-American director Miloš Forman. The investigator’s intention is to expand and challenge the existing literature on Forman, which is often based on textual analysis/interpretation and treats the director as the only possible source of meaning, and instead locate his authorial approach or author brand in previously underrepresented or completely neglected areas, including production practices, intentionality and collaborative authorship; strategies in the adaptation of literary and theatrical sources; unrealised or unfinished projects; and discourses of promotion, publicity and reception. Forman’s Czech and American work will be examined in a comparative, transnational perspective, considering relevant aspects of the industrial, cultural and socio-political context and using archival materials in the Czech Republic, the US, and elsewhere. The main outputs of the project will be an English-language monograph and a series of scholarly studies in peer-reviewed journals or edited collections.
