Infanticide in a colonially breeding passerine

Anotace anglicky

Infanticide – killing of dependent young by conspecific adults, is a complex phenomenon with diverse underlying motivations and no singular explanation. In birds, it usually represents a neglected source of mortality, because if not directly observed, the mortality is conservatively attributed to other factors such as predation, leading to an underestimation of its ecological significance. This project aims to investigate the significance of infanticide in barn swallow (Hirundo rustica), the colonially nesting passerine in which infanticide has been previously observed. By conducting detailed observations and utilizing extensive camera systems to record infanticide events across a large number of nests, and using experiments we seek to achieve the following objectives (1) identify the various types of infanticide that occur in this species, (2) determine the frequency of infanticide in the population, (3) identify individuals involved in this behavior and (4) assess the impact of different types of infanticide on the reproductive success and fitness of these individuals.
