How to Become a Good Citizen: The Educational Influence of Youth Literature in the Czech National Revival

The topic of this project is Czech children’s and young adult literature from the period between 1760 and 1850, with the aim of analyzing how this literature contributed to conveying citizen ideas and values, thus exploring its role in shaping Czech society and culture. The textual sources will be examined from both a narratological and a linguistic perspective, focusing on aspects such as subjectivity, alterity, performativity, and principles of communication. Czech youth literature of this period was often based on German models. In such cases, the relationship to the original will also be examined. At the same time, the findings of German and Czech youth literature research will be brought together. In addition to fictional youth literature, instructional texts for children on communication (such as writing guides and etiquette manuals) will also be analyzed. Furthermore, contemporary illustrations shall be recognized as an important component of children’s literature.
