Coercive Control in Intimate Partnerships: Conceptualization, Criminalization, and Public Perception

The project focuses on coercive control (CC) as a specific pattern of abuse in intimate partnerships. Its primary aim is to systematically examine CC in terms of its conceptualization and how it is understood, perceived and addressed within the Czech Republic (CR)—both in the criminal justice system and among the general public—while considering the influence of gender dynamics. Barriers and challenges in recognizing and addressing CC under the current Czech legal framework are analysed, with comparative insights from countries, primarily the United Kingdom (UK), where CC is explicitly criminalized—unlike in the CR. Using a mixed-methods approach, the project combines conceptual and legal analysis with qualitative and quantitative empirical research, including content analysis of court judgments, interviews with professionals and a public perception survey. The findings will be disseminated through journal articles focusing on the conceptualization of CC, its implicit criminalization in the CR and cross-national differences in public perception between the CR and the UK.
