Pre-Linnaean Herbaria in the Czech Republic

Anotace anglicky

The project will focus on pre-Linnaean herbaria, i.e. herbaria that do not yet use the modern binominal nomenclature as introduced by Linné (1753). They are a unique source for the study of the history of botany and its methods, allowing us to trace changes in the way plants were represented, the development of nomenclature, and plant classification or the ways in which knowledge was exchanged between Early Modern naturalists. They are often the earliest evidence of a particular plant's occurrence in a given area, and thus provide information on the history of individual plants, on changes in the use of cultivated crops, on the introduction of exotic species, or on the spread of invasive species. Only a tiny fraction of these have survived worldwide compared to printed herbals. There are also a few such herbaria in the Czech Republic. However, they have not received much attention yet and are completely unknown in the international field of historical research. Their research should help to understand and appreciate their significance and their preservation as cultural heritage.
