Moravian in the early Middle Ages

Anotace anglicky

The proposed project is part of a long-term plan managed by the Museum and National History Society in Brno, which aims to release a comprehensive series of publications focusing on the historical development of Moravia and Silesia from the beginning ofhuman settlement to the end of the first half of the 20th century. The project is a continuation of Pravěké dějiny Moravy, which was published in 1993 and is long since sold out. The planned volume is to focus on the synthesis of historical development in Moravia and Silesia from the end of the Migration Period and the coming of the first Slavic settlers to the beginning of the High Middle Ages and the changes taking place in the 13th century. The whole exposition will be based on the interpretation ofwritten sources as well as on the results of archeological excavation and on relics of material culture. The key points of the Early Middle Ages will be emphasized: the beginnings of Slavic settlement, the so-called Samo's Empire and the pre-Great Moravian era, the rise and development of Great Moravia as well as its downfall including Christianization, the 'dark' 10th century, the annexation of Moravia by the Bohemian Přemyslid state in the beginning of the 11th century, the Moravia of vassal principalities and the establishment of the margraviate. The early medieval Moravian society will also be examined with respect to economic and social development, aspects of religion, settlement development and daily life culture.
