Living Between the Lines: (Re)examining Transgressive Biographies in English-Language Literatures

Anotace anglicky

In the last two decades, there has been a global renaissance in the production of texts that self-reflexively blur the distinction between fiction and nonfiction in order to examine the various ways lives are written and selves are constructed. Taking these recent postmodern and postcolonial developments as our starting point will allow us to (re)examine some of the earlier phases and hybrid forms that have influenced the crosscurrents of biographical writing. Namely, we will examine dialogic auto/biography, literary biography, personal nonfiction, fictionate autobiography, and metabiography. Integrating examples from American, Australian, Canadian, English, and Northern Irish texts will allow us to examine these generic transformations and influencesnot only across the entirety of the twentieth century but also across the English-speaking world. The findings will be presented through a conference; through a special issue of Brno Studies in English; through an anthology of biographical writings translated into Czech and prepared in cooperation with the Brno publisher Host; and through a co-authored volume published by Masaryk University Press.
