Possible link between physical fitness, health status and attractiveness in cross-cultural perspective

Anotace anglicky

Some aspects of bodily attractiveness vary across cultures, whereas ratings of facial attractiveness show high cross-cultural agreement. Evolutionary theorists have therefore proposed that physical attractiveness is not merely in the eye of the beholderbut rather might reflect genetic quality of the individual. In this scheme, key indicators of such quality are health status and/or physical fitness. The main goal of this project is to explore possible links between health status and both facial and bodily attractiveness. Previous studies on this issue suffered from serious methodological shortcomings -particularly in their assessments of health status. In comparison, the proposed project is based on a more complex health examination that uses clinical, anamnestic and laboratory assays. Moreover, all previous studies were based on populations that enjoyed high standards of medical care; a factor that might obscure the links we plan to study. Our project consists of bi-national comparison: we will collect data in a developed country (Czech Republic) and in Namibia, where access to biomedical care is more limited. This approach will also allow us to study variations in beauty standards between the populations, and to explore associations among these standards and health and physical fitness.
