Theory of Representation in Contemporary Aesthetics

Anotace anglicky

The theory of representation as a relation of the depicting/describing to the depicted/described is a natural part of aesthetics understood - quite in a traditional way - as a theory of beauty. Beauty is a specific, explicable property with its own characteristics. Our project lies in the presumption that the concept of beauty properly explicated is just the key one of the field in the sense that just this property is attributed to objects. A problem appears as to the role of representative properties within the concept of beauty. Namely the role of properties with reference to the outer realities which they represent. Our task is to find a status of representation in the process of so-called deaestetization of art during the last century and, at the same time, relationships between this concept and ones relating to moral aspects of presupposed aesthetic value on the one hand, and a proposal for a criterion making a discrimination between possible on the other. All on the basis of representative (traditionally speaking: mimetic) properties.
