Religiopolitics - the Imperium Christianum and its Commoners (REPLICO)

Anotace anglicky

The Ottonian dynasty (919–1024) has faced increasing threats for the Holy Roman Empire, all along its borders; Magyars, Slavs, Vikings and Muslims have all imperilled its political integrity. The conventional historiography will tell that the Ottonians had a surprisingly effective solution, which changed Europe to its core at the end of the first Millennium: founding bishoprics near the borders of the Empire. This included sending missionaries and finally, integrating their neighbours into the Imperium Christianum. The critical role of the mentioned bishoprics in this process is undeniable. However, the direct impact on the rural population - that composed the most numerous part of the society – has been executed primarily by the forming network of local churches. The project REPLICO focuses on this often overlooked segment of the population, to investigate how the changes in the top-level political and ecclesiastical organisations affected the development of the local church network, and how the different strategies worked in the integration of the Slavic population in the north a
