Anotace anglicky

The environmental history of coniferous forests in Central and Eastern Europe is a significant topic because in the past two centuries a select few tree species have drastically transformed not only the landscape but also economic and social structures. This multidisciplinary environmental-historical research project will focus on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) as a key actor in this transformation. We will compare the Polish and Czech lands, where, after similar beginnings, pine followed different trajectories. The project will combine the analysis archival written and cartographic sources with dendrochronological, paleoenvironmental and tree genetic data. This interdisciplinary approach will provide a nuanced understanding of the scale and dynamics of forest landscape transformations in the past. As monoculture plantations currently struggle to cope with the effects of global climate change, our results will also present a significant contribution to on-going debates about the future management of forest in Central and Eastern Europe.
