Study of parliamentary speeches and their effects on outputs of MPs' work in the Czech Republic

The project is focused on MPs’ speeches in the Czech Chamber of Deputies since 2002. Based on two dominant theoretical MP motivations (vote-seeking and policy-seeking motivations), the project aims to answer what the features of MPs’ speeches are, what factors (on institutional, party, and individual level) influence them, and how the features of speeches influence the results of the law-making process. The project will especially place emphasis on the role of party level characteristics on MPs’ speeches. The dataset of MPs’ speeches and their features will be constructed within the project. Data will be taken from several public sources, part of the data will be manually coded with the help of student assistants. Quantitative statistical methods will be used to analyze the characteristics of MPs’ speeches and their effects on different stages of the law-making process. To validate the results, the MPs’ goals and motivations to work on parliamentary speeches will be deeply investigated using relevant qualitative techniques (e.g. interviews, process-tracing logic).
