Reconfiguring Bohemian Queenship: Power, Resources, and Effects in ca. 1300-1500

Anotace anglicky

Medieval society was ruled by a patriarchal monarchical system that tended to exclude females from power. However, queens and other royal women were powerful agents whose voices were consequential in all sectors of society. Their impact could have taken many forms, ranging from direct governance to social and cultural patronage. This project sets out to explore Bohemian queenship, that is the role and office of royal women in the Late Middle Ages, by concentrating on three aspects: power, resources, and effects. By analysis of primary sources and implementation of the most recent trends in queenship and gender studies, the project will shed light on the fluidity of agency of selected Bohemian royal women in the interaction with masculine power. To evaluate the character of gendered layers of rulership, the project will analyse financial and social resources and the legal and ritual setting, which enabled the female agency. Finally, it will study the traces and imprints of the queenly power left in material and written culture, architecture, and art in Central Europe and beyond
