In an era marked by a complex transnational polycrisis, the European Union (EU) faces significant challenges, including rising Euroscepticism and a widening gap between its institutions and citizens. Against this backdrop, the EU has intensified efforts to incorporate participatory innovations into its policymaking processes. However, existing research suggests these innovations may reinforce the EU’s depoliticized and technocratic nature. The project proposal aims to identify conditions that facilitate inclusive politicization and engagement through participatory innovations, while also theorizing the concept of “empowering dissensus.” To achieve this, the research will explore and explain the attitudes of EU parliamentarians and Czech citizens towards participatory innovations within the EU. This research is both timely and crucial, particularly given the ongoing push for participatory mechanisms at the EU level. It has the potential to offer valuable insights for EU Member States, like Czechia, where participatory innovations are just beginning to emerge.
