Between the Celts and the northern people: interactions between the middle and late La Tène societies in central Europe

The project explores the relationship between the La Téne and non-La Téne people on both sides of the Sudetes and Carpathians. In the early LT period, migrants from the south settled Silesia. The new population searched for specific ecological niches at crucial north-south passages and largely reproduced the economic model of their homeland. In the middle LT, Silesia saw the emergence of the Jastorf culture people. With time, their material culture displayed features labelled as Przeworsk. In Moravia and Bohemia, the earliest Jastorf/Przeworsk imports date back to the middle LT period. However, late LT evidence is more abundant there. The relationship between the discussed cultural groups is obscure. The differences included settlement, production and migration patterns. The project will catalogue and reevaluate the existing finds. New graphic records shall be made when needed. Samples will be taken to gather information on the daily existence of these communities. The analyses will include residue and use-wear studies of tools and vessels and studies of faunal and botanical remains.
